10 Things Not to Store in the Garage (and what you can do instead)

Garages are incredibly useful spaces. Whether you use yours for storage, a workshop, a home gym or even a studio, it often becomes the place where items end up when there’s nowhere else to put them.

However, while garages can be great for certain types of storage, they’re not always the most stable environment. Unlike the rest of your home, garages are often uninsulated, meaning they experience significant changes in temperature throughout the year. They can become very cold in winter, surprisingly warm in summer and are often more prone to damp and humidity.

These conditions can damage some items, shorten their lifespan or even create safety risks. If you want to protect your belongings and keep your garage organised, it’s important to know what not to store there.

10 Things Not to Store in the Garage

1. Paint

Paint is one of the most common items stored in garages, but it’s very sensitive to temperature changes. During winter, freezing temperatures can cause paint to separate and become unusable. In summer, excessive heat can also affect the quality and shelf life.

Better alternative: Store paint in a temperature-controlled cupboard or utility room inside the house. If you do keep it in the garage temporarily, ensure it’s in a well-insulated area and off the floor.

2. Food and Dry Goods

Garages are not ideal places for storing food. Temperature fluctuations can cause food to spoil, and even sealed items can attract pests such as mice, insects or ants.

This includes:

  • Flour and cereals

  • Pet food

  • Bird seed

  • Tinned goods stored long term

Better alternative: Keep food in kitchen cupboards or indoor pantry storage. If pet food must be kept in the garage, use airtight, pest-proof containers.

3. Paper, Books and Cardboard

Paper products are extremely vulnerable to damp. Garages often have higher humidity levels, which can cause paper to warp, become mouldy or deteriorate over time.

Cardboard boxes can also attract rodents looking for nesting materials.

Better alternative: Store documents, photographs and paperwork in sealed plastic storage containers and ideally keep them indoors where conditions are more stable.

4. Electronics

Many people store old electronics in the garage once they’ve upgraded — televisions, computers, speakers or gaming consoles. Unfortunately, electronics don’t cope well with cold, heat or humidity. Condensation inside components can cause corrosion or permanent damage.

Better alternative: If you plan to reuse, donate or sell electronics, keep them stored inside the home in a dry, temperature-controlled environment.

5. Fridges and Freezers (Unless They’re Garage-Ready)

It’s common to move an old fridge or freezer into the garage for extra storage, but standard appliances are designed to operate within specific indoor temperature ranges.

In colder garages — particularly during UK winters — they can struggle to regulate temperature properly. This can lead to food spoiling without obvious warning.

Better alternative: If you want refrigeration in the garage, choose a garage-ready fridge or freezer, specifically designed to operate in colder environments.

6. Clothing and Fabrics

Seasonal clothing, spare bedding and fabric items are often moved into the garage to free up space indoors. Unfortunately, fabrics absorb moisture really easily which can lead to mould, mildew and unpleasant odours. They can also attract moths and pests.

Better alternative: If you need long-term storage, use vacuum-sealed bags or airtight containers and ideally keep them in a loft, wardrobe or under-bed storage inside the house.

7. Wooden Furniture

Wood expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity. In garages this can lead to warping, cracking or splitting over time. Antique or high-quality wooden furniture can be particularly vulnerable.

Better alternative: If furniture needs temporary storage, keep it in a dry indoor space or climate-controlled storage unit rather than an uninsulated garage.

8. Propane Gas Cylinders

Gas cylinders used for BBQs or patio heaters should never be stored inside the garage. If a cylinder leaks, gas can accumulate in an enclosed space and create a serious fire hazard.

Better alternative: Always store propane cylinders outside in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

9. Photographs and Sentimental Items

Family photo albums, keepsakes and sentimental items can quickly deteriorate in poor conditions. Heat, cold and humidity can cause photographs to fade, stick together or become mouldy.

Better alternative: Keep sentimental items inside the house in protective boxes or albums designed for long-term preservation.

10. Wine

Wine needs consistent storage conditions to maintain its quality. Ideally it should be stored at a stable temperature between 10–15°C with minimal fluctuations. Garages rarely provide this stability, particularly throughout the changing UK seasons.

Better alternative: Store wine in a wine fridge, cellar or cool indoor cupboard where temperatures remain more consistent.
